Getting Started

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Reaching out for counseling can stir up mixed feelings, from relief to nervousness to doubt about whether your concern is serious enough. Those reactions are understandable. This guide walks through how starting care at Infinity Counseling & Wellness Center works, what you might prepare and which questions you may want to ask.

The path into care has three parts: reaching out, sharing your goals and working together.

Step One: Reaching Out

You can call (219) 472-8277 or send an appointment request through the Contact page. From there, the team can help you take the next step, including questions about services, appointment formats and insurance.

If you use the form, a short note about the kind of support you are looking for is enough to begin. Please do not include urgent or highly sensitive medical information in the form, because it is not monitored for emergencies.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, or call 911 for emergencies. Please do not wait for an appointment in that situation.

Step Two: Sharing Your Goals

Early conversations with your clinician are a chance to talk about what brings you in and what you hope will be different. You might describe what has been hard lately, how it is affecting daily life and what you have already tried. Because care at Infinity is personalized, your needs, strengths and goals shape where the work begins.

You do not have to arrive with a complete explanation, a clear label for what you are feeling or a polished list of goals. Partial answers are fine. Goals can take shape and change as you and your clinician get to know each other.

Step Three: Working Together

From there, counseling becomes a collaborative process. Sessions are a place to build healthier coping skills and strategies, try them in daily life and talk honestly about what is and is not working. There is no single pace that is right for everyone, and you can raise questions about the process at any point.

How to Prepare

Some simple preparation can ease the first steps. You might:

  • 01Have your insurance card information ready if you plan to use insurance
  • 02Jot down what you have noticed, when it started and what has helped
  • 03Think about what you would like to be different
  • 04Write down questions so they do not slip your mind
  • 05For a telehealth appointment, find a private, quiet space
  • 06For a child’s appointment, think about how to explain counseling to them

Questions You May Want to Ask

Asking questions is part of finding a good fit. You can read about the clinicians and leadership on the Our Team page and review accepted plans on the Insurance & Coverage page, and it is always wise to confirm your specific plan and benefits with the office and with your insurer.

When you reach out or meet your clinician, you may want to ask:

  • 01How sessions are usually structured
  • 02Whether in-person or telehealth appointments are available to you
  • 03Which insurance plans are accepted and how to confirm your benefits
  • 04Who your clinician would be and how they approach counseling
  • 05How goals are set and reviewed over time
  • 06How parents or caregivers take part, if the appointment is for a child or teen

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

For anything else, call (219) 472-8277. The team is glad to help.

Do you need to know which type of counseling to ask for?

No. You can simply describe what is going on, and the team can help you consider whether individual, couples, family, or child and adolescent counseling may fit best. To think it through ahead of time, read Individual, Couples or Family Counseling: How to Choose, which walks through each option.

Is it normal to feel nervous before a first appointment?

Yes. Starting something new and personal can feel uncomfortable. You are welcome to tell your clinician you feel nervous; that is useful information, not a problem. You can decide how much to share at first, and you can ask questions about the process whenever something feels unclear.

Can you ask about telehealth before scheduling?

Yes. Whether telehealth is available depends on the clinician and on where you are located during sessions. When you call or send a request, mention that you are interested in telehealth, and the team can walk you through current options. The Telehealth Counseling page also covers how to prepare.
