How Telehealth Fits Into Care at Infinity
A telehealth appointment has the same purpose as an in-person one: a supportive, collaborative conversation shaped around your needs, strengths and goals. You and your clinician can talk through what brings you in, work on coping skills and revisit goals over time, simply from different locations. Individual counseling and family counseling can take place in person or by telehealth, depending on the clinician.
Formats can differ from one clinician to another. Tia Davis, MSW, LSW, for instance, is accepting telehealth appointments only, as listed on the Our Team page.
Why Your Location Matters
Counseling licenses are issued by individual states, so where you are physically located during a session can affect which clinicians are able to see you by telehealth. That is one reason to mention where you expect to be during sessions when you first reach out.
If you plan to travel, move or spend extended time somewhere else, let your clinician know ahead of time. A change in location can affect whether a telehealth session can go forward as planned.
Preparing Your Space and Technology
A little preparation can help a telehealth session feel more focused and private. It is also worth asking your clinician ahead of time what to do if the connection drops, so you both know the plan. Technology problems happen, and a brief interruption does not have to undo the work of a session.
If privacy at home is hard to find, it may help to plan sessions for times when others are out, or to look for another quiet, private spot where you can speak freely.
Some general tips for the day of a session:
- 01Choose a room where you are unlikely to be overheard or interrupted
- 02Use headphones if others are nearby, and silence notifications
- 03Check your internet connection and charge your device beforehand
- 04Keep water, tissues or notes within reach
- 05Join a few minutes early so you have time to settle in
When In-Person Counseling May Feel Like a Better Fit
Telehealth suits some situations better than others, and preferences can change over time. If the format you started with stops feeling right, raise it with your clinician or the office, and the team can talk through what is possible.
Meeting at the Crown Point office may feel like a better fit if:
- 01Finding a private, uninterrupted space at home is difficult
- 02You feel more settled talking face to face in the same room
- 03Screens make it harder for you to focus or feel connected
- 04A younger child has trouble staying engaged through a device
- 05You would like counseling to feel separate from home
